Jianjun Zhao

Jianjun Zhao is a Professor at Kyushu University, Japan, whose research connects software engineering with quantum computing. He is interested in a simple question: if quantum programs are to become real software, how can we make them easier to understand and test, and more reliable in practice? Building on his long-standing work in software engineering, he now studies quantum program analysis, testing, debugging, repair, and software quality. More broadly, he is interested in making quantum software engineering a more systematic and practical field.

Quantum Programming: A Software Engineering Perspective

This lecture looks at quantum programming from a software engineering perspective. After a brief review of basic ideas such as superposition, entanglement, circuits, and measurement, it focuses on how quantum programs are written and organized in circuit-based and hybrid quantum-classical settings. The lecture then discusses why reliable quantum software is difficult to build, with a focus on abstraction, modularity, program analysis, testing, debugging, and software quality. It also highlights several open research problems in this area. The aim is to help participants see quantum programming not only as a way to express quantum algorithms, but also as an engineering activity that requires systematic methods and tools.
